Rise of the Runelords
What is Thassilon
Stodgy scholars and historians of antiquity are at constant odds about the history of the world before Earthfall and the Age of Darkness. Having happened over 10,000 years ago, very little is truly known of the mysterious ruined monoliths scattered throughout the landscape of Varisia. The only thing they do agree on is that it seems to have been as powerful as it was far-reaching. The Varisians and Shoanti both speak of an ancient enemy that had enslaved them, but have no real detail within their oral histories. It is also said that the civilization, known today as Thassilon, had it’s own form of magic using runes that helped enslave giants to create their huge monuments whose ruins can still be found today. Studies of the recently discovered ruins of Savith Yi indicate that Thassilon could perhaps have been an empire derived from the ancient Azlant, who also lived before Earthfall.
Beyond the suppositions of the type of culture it was and the fact that Earthfall happened, there are just as many theories of the nation’s fall. It is quite likely that the constant feuding between the lords of the civilization corrupted it from within. Some historians theorize that the enslaved giants revolted and tore apart the very structures and edifices they were forced to build. A smaller number of Thassilonian scholars hypothesize that, in their efforts to explore newer and darker realms of their magic, the lords unleashed an evil power so immense that even they could not control it, resulting in the downfall of their arcane empire. Whatever the reason, Thassilon, like Azlant, is no more than a thing of legend in the modern world—a reminder that even the mightiest can fall.
