The rest of the house is not any better. Upstairs is the trap-making lab for these jerks, and we take all their good stuff. Serves them right for messing with us and being such uber-douches. The basement contains the skin-shucking room, for making their human leather furniture, a huge plant monster, as well as a bunch of mostly useless junk, including a collection of severed noses to go with our collection of severed fingers from up above. That’s certainly a prank waiting to happen, even if this place is still disgusting.
The barn contains a bunch of empty kennels, as well as a large, boarded up door. Behind it we find the lair of their pet ogre spider, as all as a few live captives. I summon a rhinoceros to smash the spider up good, and we rescue the poor, emaciated captives.
Jakardros Sovark, the second in command at Fort Rannick, and apparently Shalelu’s step-father, is one of the prisoners, and he informs us that the fort has been taken by ogres! I hate ogres, but not as much as Beldar. I think he was molested by them or something, and has traveled the world seeking his revenge. Or, maybe he just doesn’t like them because they are bad guys. Either way.
Vale Temrose, another Black Arrow, is also grateful for his rescue. Cavin Windstrike, a third Arrow, is the last prisoner. We return their clothes and equipment, and we head back to town with our new friends.
After our victory celebration, we check in on our freed prisoners to get a better feel for what we are about to face. Apparently, these men were out on patrol when the fort was taken, and returned to find it controlled by the ogres. They tried to liberate the keep, and were defeated and forced to flee. That’s when the ogrekin found them and took them for food and furniture supplies.
Being troops from the fort, they give us some great information about a back door guarded by shocker lizards. We plan to set the lizards loose in the keep while we attack from the skies, hopefully keeping them off balance and allowing us to end their threat in astounding fashion. Death from above! Woo hoo! Dive bomb those bitches!
However, during our discussions, we find out that Cavin was a “special customer” of the sunken ferry, and that he is marked by the sihedron – a tattoo on his arm. He apparently unwittingly gave out information on the keep’s defenses to his lover, Lucretia. She is likely the Sister we read about in the letter to Xanesha. We allow his companions to take care of his treachery, while we continue to plan our assault. After Shalelu guides us to some bitter bark to smoke out the shocker lizards, we are ready for a fight.
Our lizard feint is a complete success! The little guys are wiped out pretty swiftly by the ogres, but not before doing some serious damage. It gives us time to set up our ambush, and the first wave of ogres falls in relative ease. The second wave is a little more fierce, with one massive barbarian Kreeg and a witchy woman to boot!
